The History & Appeal of Bohle Plains, QLD
1st August 2024

Situated west of Townsville City, Bohle Plains is rapidly becoming one of the most coveted places to live in North Queensland. Bohle Plains has come a long way in terms of development into the pristine community it is now, with a history of significant transformation over the past 140 years.

Once a struggling rural region that competed for basic services and amenities, Bohle Plains today features world-class master-planned communities with excellent transportation accessibility, shopping centres, and a wealth of recreational opportunities.

A look at Bohle Plain’s history

Bohle Plains is situated in the traditional Wulgurukaba Aboriginal country. Named after the nearby Bohle River, the region has its roots in cattle droving since Henry Mackinnon Bohle brought cattle to the district in 1863.

Since its settlement in the late 1800s, the historical growth of Bohle Plains has been shaped by its close relationship to the settlement of Townsville — the rapid expansion in the 1870s and 1880s mirrors the surge in housing and infrastructure development today.

By the 1980s, the pre-existing City of Thuringowa saw the Bohle Plains undergo significant development as a peri-urban zone. At the time, this led the council to begin approving semi-rural and urban residential development on a huge scale.

In 1986 the population of the Bohle Plains reached over 2,000, leading to the rise of new commercial ventures such as the development of the area’s first major retail centre, the Woodlands Shopping Centre in August 1985, as well as a BP petrol station in October 1986.

Bohle Plains today – a snapshot

In the last decade, there has been a major shift in the Bohle Plains real estate market. Master-planned communities have begun to spring up, offering opportunities for the wave of local migrants looking to settle in North Queensland. One of the two most recently announced master-planned communities in the Townsville area includes Harris Crossing in Bohle Plains.

These master-planned communities differ from traditional residential development, due to the added luxury and exclusivity of local amenities such as sporting complexes, large shopping centres, parkland trails, and bike paths.
